Historic insurance company specializing exclusively in legal protection insurance since its founding in Le Mans in 1917 under the name Defense Automobile et Sportive, on the initiative of Georges Durand, founder of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Regarded as the very first legal protection insurance in the world, DAS saw rapid early success, growing from 1,000 policies in 1918 to more than 10,000 in 1920, driven by the exponential growth of the automotive industry. DAS merged with APJ at the end of 2018 to form Covea Protection Juridique, a subsidiary of the Covea group (MAAF, MMA, GMF). Now the leader of the French legal protection market with revenue of 305 million euros in 2024, the entity provides a team of nearly 420 in-house legal experts to support individuals and businesses in resolving their disputes.
